Moto X custom engraving hits a snag

Last week, Motorola flipped the switch on its online Moto Maker customization tool for the Moto X a little early, giving tech writers like our own Michael Fisher and Taylor Martin an early look at what users could expect. That included making a lot of decisions about color choices, but also about whether or not to go with a custom engraving on the phone’s back. While Taylor was able to put some text on the back of his Moto X, not everyone’s been so lucky, and it sounds like Motorola’s been hitting some quality issues with this whole engraving idea.

Over on GigaOM, Kevin C. Tofel ordered his own Moto X, engraving and all. However, Motorola contacted him to let him know that’s not how his phone would ultimately arrive, explaining “a custom message is no longer available at this time” and saying the feature would need “additional work before we launch.”

It’s probably worth noting that the text on Taylor’s phone, as you can see above, is printed, not physically engraved. We’re not sure if that’s a stop-gap solution, or if maybe Motorola never meant “engraving” to be taken literally. Expect Motorola to clarify this situation soon, with AT&T sales set to begin this Friday.
