This summer, we’ve already seen Samsung introduce a refreshed Exynos 5 Octa, the 5420, with a slightly higher clock speed and a new GPU. We also heard a rumor about another improvement coming to Samsung’s chip, with the suggestion we’d be seeing some variant using all of its big.LITTLE cores at once in heterogeneous multi-processing mode. Sure enough, Samsung confirmed this development yesterday, announcing that an HMP solution would become available later this year. Today we get some new details about what might be in store for us, and how existing devices might benefit.

The big question has been if this HMP business would only be something we’d see going forward, of if Samsung might revisit the Exynos 5 Octa chips already in devices. Well, remember it’s not just Samsung models that run Exynos chips, and there’s a 5410 -just like the Galaxy S 4 runs- in the Meizu MX3.

Even if Samsung isn’t sharing update details, Meizu is talking, and it looks like there are plans to bring HMP to the MX3 via software update. While far from set in stone, that gives us hope about seeing similar updates arrive for all the other hardware built around Exynos 5 Octa chips.
